Restaurant Review - Fazeley Focus (June 24, 2005) Restaurant Review
THE GATE INN
Ratcliffe Culey
We arrived at the Gate Inn to a very warm welcome from Terry, whilst showing us to our table he told us that the Restaurant had recently been refurbished and believe me when I say they have made a very good job of it.
We ordered our meals with the 2 starters, being Mushrooms with Garlic butter and Spicy potato wedges with salsa dip, both very reasonably priced at £3.00 and £1.90 respectively. They both arrived with great efficiency and were nice sized portions too. The garlic butter was still visible on the Mushrooms and melting to perfection with the garlic not being to overpowering. The Salsa dip had a certain kick so with the spicy wedges this was definitely a starter for the spicy palette.
Main meals were home made Lasagne and Mixed Grill. The Lasagne tasted home made and was delicious a credit to the chef, Chris. It was served with nice chunky chips and fresh vegetables well worth the £6.50 price tag. The mixed grill was extreme value at £8.95 containing Rump steak, Gammon 2 Sausage, Chop, Liver Kidney and Black Pudding, again served with Chunky Chips and fresh vegetables. It is a sight to behold when put in front of you. The Steak was ordered “well done”, it was but still moist and juicy, again Chris excelled and her many years experience as the chef here showed. They also do a mammoth mixed grill which is as per the ordinary grill but doubled – you really are going to have a heart appetite to manage this one.
The restaurant was filling up by this time and Terry told us that it is advisable to be booking your table in advance as they are very busy and tables are at a premium at certain times.
We ordered the sweets of Cherry Cheesecake and a Knickerbocker Glory but were unable to eat them as we had to leave as our baby son was unwell. We did however look at some of the sweets coming out and they looked very scrummy and at a price of £2.75 were excellent value for again some nicely portioned food.
Overall this was excellent value for money, well worth the little travel out and Terry and June have very good asset in Chris their Chef.
The Restaurant is totally no smoking even at the bar. There is an area allocateed for smokers on the covered and heated patio area. Also outside is a childrens play area along with some large games such as connect 4.
The Children also get their own special menu and it isn't the usual burgers nuggets & spaghetti. It has a full and varied menu very much mirroring the main menu but in little people portions.
So we would reccomend you give the Gate a call and see for yourself the high standards and huge portions.
